French Language and Literature

Department Image

The Department of French Language and Literature at SKKU has a relatively long history among French studies in Korean higher education. While providing intensive training in French language and literature, the department has long been a leader in connecting literary areas to broader issues in cross-cultural studies and criticism.

The Department offers students the opportunity to pursue course work at all levels in the languages, cultures, literatures, and intellectual histories of the French tradition. Students will find a broad range of courses covering language acquisition and refinement, literary history and criticism, cultural history and theory, EU politics and economy.

The department's course offerings reflect a conscious effort to accommodate the needs of undergraduate and graduate students. French undergraduate majors receive a comprehensive study of their respective literatures and cultures, establishing a solid basis for potential further study in literature or history.

At the graduate level, a terminal M.A. and a Ph.D. (with various possible minors and combined degrees) are offered. The curriculum is also designed to benefit students with varying interests and levels of language proficiency. Students interested in international relations, european history and literature, or film studies, will find relevant courses within the department's offerings.

Student activities are also a centerpiece of the department. Students of our department have been performing various jewels of French theater every year in french, and the tradition is ongoing for 50 years. The theater offers an occasion of gathering among the students to build up the cohesion, and of course an opportunity to improve their language skills.

The department currently maintains international student exchange agreements with the most prestigious universities in France, such as Lyon University, Grenoble University, La Rochelle University and Paris Business School. The priority is to provide our students with a wide range of choices for their future plans. The department focuses primarily on fostering professionals, whose knowledge and capabilities cover from French culture to international relations.
