- The France Ambassador to Korea Visits SKKU
- Meeting with SKKU’s president, Kyu Sang CHUNG on June 22th (Thursday). At the meeting, they exchanged ideas to develop the cooperation between France and SKKU. In particular, the attendees had a discussion about expanding the boundaries of their exchange activities from culture, art, and language fields to business management, basic science, and engineering. They talked about the need for exchange activities for graduate and Ph.D. students, for dual-degree programs, and for MBA programs between distinguished universities in France and Korea. They also shared their development plans and strategies for supporting start-up corporations from the connection between French Tech Hub and SKKU’s Special Graduate School of Global Start-Up. Furthermore, they agreed to develop am exchange and cooperation program for K-MOOC (Korean Massive Open Online Course) and F-MOOC (France Massive Open Online Course) so that students from the two countries can have a better understanding of and more interest in each other. From this meeting, the bilateral ties between France and SKKU are expected to develop further.

- SKKU Enters Top 100 in THE World Reputation Rankings for First Time
- SKKU has placed within top 100 in World Reputation Rankings by Times Higher Education (THE) for the first time. On July 15th, THE announced the World Reputation Rankings 2017. In the evaluation, three universities in Korea were listed in Top 100: Seoul National University (45th), KAIST (81~90th), and SKKU (90~100th). Meanwhile, Harvard University ranked No. 1 for the seventh year in a row while MIT and Stanford University placed 2nd and 3rd, respectively. - College of Liberal Arts presents prizes to best teachers in this college
- On June 19, 2017, best teachers in this college won the prizes by Dean of college of liberal arts(Kwon, In Han). They were chosen due to the high lecture evaluation by students attending classes in 2016. Winners are as follows: Ryu Hee Seung, Kang So Young, Lee Young Jae, and Oh Min Jong. 1. Ryu Hee Seung lectured on Basic Japanese 1 in the first semester of 2016 and Basic Japanese 1, Basic Japanese 2 in the second semester of 2016. 2. Kang So Young lectured on "Appreciate Modern Chinese Literature" and "Elementary Chinese Conversation I" during the first semester in 2016, and she taught Basic Chinese 1 and "Elementary Chinese Conversation II". 3. Lee Young Jae lectured on "Understanding the formation of Japanese popular culture" and "Appreciation of Japanese visual culture" in the first semester in 2016. He also taught "Appreciation of Japanese visual culture" and "Study of Comparative Literature and Culture". 4. Oh Min Jeong lectured on "Elementary German Ι", "Reading Themes in Literature", and "German Performing Arts and Film" during the first semester in 2016. She also taught "German Alternative Culture" in the second semester of 2016.

- The office of liberal arts hosted an international students seminar on 29th, 30th of May.
- The office of liberal arts hosted an international students seminar on 29th, 30th of May. At the seminar, students can obtain information such as university policy, graduation conditions, and VISA. With mild temperature, students asked some questions without any pressure. More than 10 students attended the seminar with pizza, beverage, and guidebooks. In the next semester, another seminar will be held with more information.

- Lee Hyo-Jin (Russian Language and Literature 13) won the 7th National Russian Language Discussion Competition. On May 19, 2017, at the International Conference Room of the Korea Foreign Language University, the 7th National Russian Language Discussion Competition was held jointly by the HK Research Foundation of the Korea Research Institute of Foreign Studies and Embassy of the Russian Federation in Korea. In this competition Lee Hyo-Jin (Russian Language and Literature 13) won the grand prize and awarded a round-trip ticket to Moskow and a short-term training session to Pusikin National Language University. National Russian Language Discussion Competition has been held annually since 2011 to promote university students who view Russia and support young talented people. At the competition, there are twenty students selected through the preliminary election in this conference. Professor Kwon, In Han(Dean of College of Liberal Arts) won the Academic Award(Duge Scholarship Award) The Society for Diagnosis (Chairman Lee, Hyeon-Hee) announced on March 3 that Professor Kwon, In Han(Dean of College of Liberal Arts in SungKyunKwan Universitiy) won the Academic Award, which is the 36th Dugie Scholarship Award winner. Professor Kwon published "New Study on King Gwanggaeto the great," in 2015. In this book, he describes the Korean Language in terms of phoneme, grammar, and words in the monument of the King.

- SKKU International Students Experience Seoul and Korean Culture
- The Office of International Student Services (OISS) held the “SKKU International Student Culture Experience and Exchange Program of the Humanities Social Sciences Campus (HSSC) and Natural Sciences Campus (NSC) - 2017 Sungkyunwan Tour and Seoul Castle Road Walk” as a student activity on the 13th (SAT) of May. More than 50 international students participated in this event. Especially, 30 students from the NSC enjoyed the Seoul castle walk and HSS Campus tour as it was their first visit to the HSSC. After the walking tour, all of the participants enjoyed Korean traditional food (bibimbab, seafood & potato pancake) for lunch. The OISS plans to provide various events for international students at both the Humanities and Social Sciences and Natural Sciences Campus to experience Korea’s unique culture. This event was the start of cultural programs for 2017 and a tour of the NSC and Suwon Hwasung Fortress will be held next time.

- SKKU Holds 9th Central Asia Sungkyun Writing Contest
- “I started to think about what can I share with others after I saw a disable student playing the flute for Arirang which he learned from a Korean volunteer.” That was a passage from Tajik State University of Commerce student Mirzoaliev Khushnud’s (25) writing for the 9th Central Asia Sungkyun Writing Contest about the subject of “True Happiness”. At the writing contest around 40 students from four countries including Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan participated: Khushnud received the gold prize. SKKU holds the Sungkyun Korean Writing Contest every year in various regions like China, Southeast Asia, Central Asia, and East Europe with the aim to expand Korean culture and cultivate students that can take part in exchanges between Korea and the other countries. SKKU provides full scholarships for graduate programs to winners of the event. Aidarova Aigerim who won the gold prize at the 4th Central Asia Sungkyun Korean Writing Contest received her degree at SKKU Graduate School of Political Science and Diplomacy, and is currently working as a diplomat for the Kazakhstani government. The Sungkyun Writing Contest overcame a financial setback in 2010 when SKKU couldn’t hold the event due to a lack of funding in its budget. However, with support from Hong Duk KIM, an SKKU alumnus and CEO of Ierae CS, the event was able to continue since 2011. “I would like to provide continuous support so that the Sungkyun Writing Contest can get bigger and bigger,” said Mr. Kim. .

- SKKU has proved to be a ‘Global Top University’
- Beyond one of the renowned universities in Korea, SKKU has proved to be a ‘Global Top University’ by placing high in evaluation rankings. Recently, SKKU placed 13th in the ‘Asia University Rankings 2017’ by Times Higher Education, while ranking 1st among Korean comprehensive private universities. The Times stated that “from continuous development, SKKU is leading changes among Korean higher education institutions.” SKKU declared a ‘New Challenge Project’ last year in order to step forward and become a globally renowned university. This project includes action plans to be placed in the Asia top 10 and World top 50 from competitions with international universities. SKKU is strengthening its networks with research-oriented universities of the world, such as expanding joint forums with top engineering schools in the US. This year, SKKU plans to hold a join forum with the University of Minnesota in the field of Nano and Physics and SKKU-PKU forum with Peking University, China. The President of SKKU, Kyu Sang CHUNG said “I am very happy to see these results which represent SKKU’s hard work over the past years. Through the ‘New Challenge Project’, SKKU will focus on developing its core strategy and becoming a world renowned university.” Since Samsung Foundation joined SKKU management in 1996, the university has shown rapid development. Nowadays, SKKU is working on education innovation with Samsung to cultivate the most talented engineers. Also, many convergence programs and systems are in the process of development according to the needs of the 4th industrial revolution era.
