This course is for a general understanding of East Asian classical philology. First of all, it introduces books and DBs, which are essential for researching East Asian classics and literature, and investigate the form of ancient books with original manuscripts. Afterward, this course will study three major fields of classical philology ─ cataloging studies, proofreading studies, and edition studies. It introduces not only the pre-modern bibliography of Korea, China, and Japan but also the modern bibliography to develop the East Asian comparative perspective. Lastly, it explores the issues and problems of bibliography in Korea and its future tasks and prospects.

A current literature study has become so extensive that it extends to cultural study. Besides, the study of material is being strengthened now, while the study for the spirit was mainly focused in the traditional period. In this respect, the importance of understanding the book and publishing culture, which is closely related to the classical study, arises. This course focuses on an understanding of the publishing culture from the pre-modern period (especially Chosŏn) to the modern transition period in Korea. It covers the publication and distribution of books and intellectual history. Furthermore, it broadens the understanding of the publishing and cultural history of China, Japan, and Vietnam to provide a comparative view of the Sinographic culture of East Asia.

Understand the form and type of Korean historical manuscripts and learn research method through presentations and practice. Understand the classification and characteristics of royal manuscripts, government manuscripts, and private manuscripts, and learn how to investigate and organize manuscripts. This class includes the practice of reading manuscripts in Jongyeonggak library.

LIT2001 The Introduction to the Classical Literature in The East Asia 3 6 Major Bachelor Classics Korean Yes
This course aims to enhance the overall understanding of the classics of East Asia and related literature. To do this, students will develop the basic understanding of literature, history and philosophy of this area. Through this, they will start to build up the understanding- learning oriental studies with oriental classics of literature and basic elements(phonology, dictionary, bibliography, proofreading, etc.), introducing philological method of study, observing the life-sized classic literature books, studying the process of major texts’ formation focusing primarily on the Chinese classics and university/particularity of Korean, Japan, and Vietnamese cultures and utilizing/classifying the literature and so on. After this, students discuss the role of the classics of East Asia in 21C, and value of this field. By referring to the neighboring countries’ major projects, we will review the our situation and set the future goals as well.

We will study various types of Chinese classics in time periods. Also, we will study various writing styles- authentic and specific, so we can compare other countries’ writing styles as well.

This course examines general theories regarding translation studies and discusses values and roles of Chinese classics translation in Korea. It explores commonalities and peculiarities of Chinese classics translation, and helps students develop their sense of value for translation.

Korean scholars had used the annotations and particles in order to analyze and clarify the meanings of Chinese classics. Therefore, knowledges of the annotations and particles are the key to understand the ways in which Korean scholars read Chinese classics in traditional times. By exploring the annotations and particles, this course discusses how to use them for contemporary translations of old documents.

This course improves our understanding of Chinese characters through examining their origins and development. First, it examines forms, sounds and meanings of classifiers to understand their origins. It further explores the structure of Chinese characters, and their original and derivative meanings, and discusses how to apply them to our translation of Chinese classics.
