Media reflect the world we belong to, and information transmitted through words and voices expresses our ideas and our conception of the society in which we live. Therefore, learning through media is very helpful to get familiar with a culture and understand the people who live in that culture. This course focuses on better understanding of French realities and heritage through various media. It aims at arising students’ interest in French culture, current events, contemporary French issues as well as relations with other countries. Media contents lead to discussions on various topics surveyed such as community life, behaviors, habits, new tendencies. Through this course, students also improve their comprehension of implicit aspects contained in speech and culture. Media used during the class – including Internet – are mainly TV5Monde, radio RFI, videos, newspapers and magazines. The class is taught in French therefore requires an intermediate level in French language (listening, reading and speaking).

ILI2001 Machine Translation and Linguistics 3 6 Major Bachelor Korean Yes
In this class students learn about the structure and the characteristics of machine translation systems like Google Translator, Systran, and Genie Talk of ETRI. In many cases, a machine translation system employs a linguistic knowledge base. The participants of the class will learn about the feature and the characteristics of the linguistic knowledge base. Based on this, the participants will have a chance to research on the methods to improve the existing MT systems or to make the most use of the MT systems. There are no speicfic prerequisites to take part in this class except for some basic linguistic knowledge regardless of a background language.
ILI2002 Introduction to Computational Linguistics 3 6 Major Bachelor 3-4 Korean Yes
This course deals with the basic concepts and applications of computational linguistics. In this course the participants are given chances to learn the concepts and theories of morphological analysis, structural analysis, and semantic analysis for Korean and English. After learning the basic concepts of language analysis, it deals with concepts such as wordnet and ontology, and treats application areas such as machine translation and text mining. In order to take participate in this class, it is recommended, but not necessary, to take liberal arts classes such as introduction to linguistics. Also, no prior knowledge of computer programming is required.

Cognitive Linguistics is a linguistic theory. Language is just a cognitive process which needs to be interpreted by various language users. Cognitive Linguistics provides an interpretation of diverse linguistic phenomena. This course is for anybody who is interested in Cognitive Linguistics. This is an inquiry-based course, which means that instead of me shoveling information at you, I will give you questions to think about or problems to solve. We will discuss our answers and solutions and thereby come to grips with the theoretical framework of Cognitive Linguistics. This course depends on your active participation, so please dig in and enjoy! It is not necessary, but preferably to have knowledge of linguistic terms (especially terms related to semantics) This course will involve readings, homework, presentations, a midterm, and a final. Readings. These are noted in the assignment schedule. It is very important to keep up with them, because often you will need to know what was covered in the reading in order to make sense of a homework assignment. Homework. When we read the textbook, you must write up summary of the chapters you have read. The summary has to include important concepts of the chapters and the possible application to Slavic and Korean linguistics. Additional assignments may be asked to do by the instructor. You are expected to attempt ALL of them, and to bring some written record of your work to the next class.

This course aims to identify language universal and specific properties, by comparing linguistic structures of the main India-European languages and Korean from a syntactic point of view, and eventually to better understand cognitive processes behind human communication.

One of the fields undergoing the most change along with digital civilization is the use of human language. This means that we are experiencing a huge change in communication-focused language activities through the use of online platforms and smart devices. Furthermore, AI-enabled voice recognition technology has opened a new chapter in the communication between human beings and machines. In this course, we will examine human language from an evolutionary perspective, focusing on the characteristics of the output of each era, while thinking about the future of language in the era of digital culture.
ILI3005 A Contrastive Phonetics of Korean and English 3 6 Major Bachelor 3-4 - No
'A Contrastive Phonetics of Korean and English' deals with the phonetic and phonological differences of two languages. More specifically, we focus on the phoneme, the syllable structure and the phonological structure of the two languages. Foreign language learners are very much influenced by their mother tongue, especially pronunciationwise. Through this course, we would be able to explain the pronunciation errors made by native English speakers learning Korean and Koreans learning English.

This course is a practical introduction to psycholinguistics -- the study of how humans learn, represent, comprehend, and produce language. The course aims to provide students with a solid understanding of both the research methodologies used in psycholinguistic research and many of the well-established findings in the field. Topics covered will include word recognition, sentence comprehension, reading, discourse and inference, sentence production, language acquisition, language in the brain, and language disorders. Students will conduct a small but original research project and gain experience with reporting and critiquing psycholinguistic research.

This course aims to teach the fundamentals of artificial intelligence starting with the concepts of intelligence, rationality and intelligent agents. Next, it will probe into problem solving, introducing the notion of search by drawing examples from puzzles and games amongst others. Then, the basics of knowledge representation and reasoning, such as logic and planning will be explored. Machine learning, a fast growing subfield of A.I. will also be covered focusing on technologies and real-world applications such as games, biomedical applications, social networks and smart technologies. Further topics (time-permitting) include the impact of major A.I. areas such as robotics and computer vision, natural language and speech processing in our society today. This is an introductory course and would be suitable for anyone interested to delve deeper into A.I. in the near future. Students will be given assignments that do not require any programming.

To understand this further, this course will deeply explore diverse context of Korea that have shaped K Pop and Korean media products, especially its historical, political economic, social, and cultural context. Also, this course gives an opportunity to understand key aspects of Korean culture behind K Pop and Korean media products as well.

This course explores various topics that have significance in the context of Russians and their habitats around the world. Topics will include self and others, metaphor and metonymy, prototypes, the mutual influence of culture and language, discrepancies between the written and spoken languages, and so forth. Through this course, students will have a better understanding of the Russian in general, whether linguistic or not.
