Internet, smartphones, and sensors are the main components of this networked society that provides convenience and also issues to us. In this course, we are going to study the various aspects of big data analysis for social changes. The topics are the definition, history, value proposition, case analysis, python programming, data analysis techniques, business statistics, and big data project management. The course will cover the opportunities and challenges of the big data analysis as well. We are going to use a real dataset from local and global communities to address the various issues. This course will be more practical than theoretical. Students will gain the knowledge, techniques, and tools to apply for their projects in their places.

When executed well, the values can connect us with like-minded people and inspire us to take action. For all these reasons, social enterprises and nonprofit organizations working on tackling the world’s most critical challenges like environmental pollution, poverty, or sexual violence, need to build strong value propositions. In our fast-moving and chaotic world, it matters more than ever that social change-makers learn how to create an innovative value aligned with your social mission and purpose. This is an intensive capstone design that will challenge you to get into the real world to talk to people and test your ideas. You’ll apply the empathy methods to formulate value propositions across industries, sectors, and geographies for deeply understanding pain-points of people and generating breakthrough ideas. Understanding the entire process of value proposition is an initial requirement to achieving reliable innovation. However, an organization also must understand the specific methods and activities of empathy. They may include things as simple as an observation, or as hard as an ethnography for analyzing and sharing innovation insights and protocols. A social innovator needs to be familiar with a variety of empathy methods in order to choose them effectively for a successful value proposition.

Design Thinking applies the methodologies of design to challenges in business and society which makes it central to innovation. This class is offered for those who participate in team entrepreneurship programs developed according to MTA or Tiimiakatemia Methods (TM) in general. Students develop their basic capabilities as social team entrepreneurs in design thinking, lean startup, empathizing, communication, collaboration. Toward the latter half of the class, they also learn how to develop business models for their selected social problems as the sustainable system and how to confirm their validity.

This class deals with social problems of the underdeveoped countries, as defined in UN SDG (Sustainable development goals). Using empathy simluation game RealLives, students develop empathy for those living in less developed countires and define the problem they want to solve. This class will help students understand that global problems are essentially ours and that global social entrepreneurship is a fundamental skill for change-making for humanity.
