This course explores the Japanese empire which left an indelible impact on post-1945 East Asia. The purpose of this course is 1) to provide basic understanding on the making and unmaking of the Japanese empire as well as the diversity of experiences within the empire, 2) to help students locate the experiences of the Japanese empire in comparative perspectives, 3) and appreciate diverse perspectives interpreting its history. The lecture part explores the who constructed, operated, and dismantled the empire how, a significant blind spot in the Korea public debates despite historians’ vested interest in independent activism during the colonial period. Beside the textbook, students will read memoirs of a Japanese settler in Manchuria to understand the first-hand experiences and their diversity in the empire. | |||||||||
