This course will examine various genres of children’s literature starting from the Victorian era to the present. Genres to be covered include fairy tales, fantasy, realistic and historical fiction, poetry, short stories, and manhwa (both graphic novels and animated film). When we examine these narrative forms in relation to children’s literature, we will also discuss how these narratives answer the following thematic questions. What does it mean to grow up? What does it mean to be a child? How does children’s literature reflect or reshape societal problems in current adults’ society? What IS children’s literature? What does it mean to you, a young adult reader who is on the threshold of adulthood?
