The users of language, as social beings, communicate and use language on society’s premises. To fully understand how language is used in human communication, therefore, it is essential to understand how factors such as time, place, and the social relationship between speaker and hearer affect the way language is used to perform different functions. This course provides an introduction to the rapidly developing field of pragmatics – the study of the fundamental principles of language use from the point of view of users, the constraints they encounter in social interaction, and the effects their use of language has on other participants in communication.

This course will examine various genres of children’s literature starting from the Victorian era to the present. Genres to be covered include fairy tales, fantasy, realistic and historical fiction, poetry, short stories, and manhwa (both graphic novels and animated film). When we examine these narrative forms in relation to children’s literature, we will also discuss how these narratives answer the following thematic questions. What does it mean to grow up? What does it mean to be a child? How does children’s literature reflect or reshape societal problems in current adults’ society? What IS children’s literature? What does it mean to you, a young adult reader who is on the threshold of adulthood? How does individual development resonate in children’s literature in the context of national development, race issues, class hierarchy, romance plot, and nonhumans?

This course provides an opportunity and a structure in which to think about the idea of form itself. To this end, we will read a large number of texts and overview the history of poetry in English very carefully.
ENG2025 Data Science for Language Analysis 3 6 Major Bachelor English Yes
This course introduces students to key methods and findings in data science for language analysis. We will begin the course by examining motivations for using big data (rather than just intuition) to understand and analyze language, culture and social change. We then introduce students to the key programing language Python and statistical methods/modules used to analyze language and social science data including pandas, numpy, and matplotlib.
ENG2026 English Linguistics and Language Engineering 3 6 Major Bachelor Korean Yes
This course introduces major language engineering techniques used in artificial intelligence-based systems and big data analysis. Students will learn various linguistic analysis methods (lexical/morphological, syntactic, semantic analysis, etc.) for English corpora, such as BNC, IMDB, and COCA, and practice using language processing toolkits based on Python. Students will also learn to understand and predict patterns of human language use and thoughts based on analyzing language data.
