Understanding culture and society in the 1980s is essential to understand the current cultural politics and ideology of Korea. This course deals with the literature and the culture of the 1980s. It was when democracy, the civil movement, and the labor literature, and public literary and artistic movement were active. Also at the same time, economic growth and popular culture flourished. In this course, we explore the cultural movement, the logic and the popular culture that were published in the 1980s, in addition to the various literary works.

We will review the history of literature on the entire Korean peninsula based on the mutual understanding of South Korean literature and North Korean literature in this seminar. We also try to understand the literary phenomenon under the relationship between Korea and the neighboring countries of East Asia, focusing on North Korean literature and culture. We will study in depth the relationship between the division system or the peace regime and the Korean peninsula literature. We will focus on literature, but we will aim to open the horizon to the whole cultural phenomenon.

Korean major database systems, such as Korean Old and Rare Collection Information system built by National Library of Korea and Database system built by Institute for the Translation of Korean Classics, will be mainly used In this course. Representative database systems that were established in China will also be utilized. Students attempts to discover new classical materials and can improve their ability to analyze works in various and innovative ways.

This course comprehensively reviews the research results currently conducted in the South and North Korea based on a broad comparison of the languages ​​of North and South Korea, and understands the structure of academic logic and theories developed in the North and South in each field of language theory and application. From a macroscopic point of view, the purpose of this study is to present a procedure and methodology for an integrated approach to the study of South and North Korean languages. In particular, through efforts to objectively understand historical commonalities and current differences in the fields of linguistic norms, Korean dictionaries, and grammar theories, which were conducted separately in the political situation of division, the history and direction of development of Korean language knowledge and grammar theory In order to grasp an integrated perspective, such as, issues and core structures.
